Are Mold Inspections really that important?
Florida is often considered a paradise for people. Unfortunately, it is for mold as well. Because of the state’s humid, tropical climate, mold spores nearly always exist inside and outside most Florida homes. However, the real problem arises when these begin multiplying and spreading. Once mold finds a sustainable food source, such as drywall and wood, the colony is going to expand and emit increasingly larger numbers of spores into the air you breathe inside your home. And that is one of the leading causes of allergic reactions and respiratory ailments that snowball into bigger health issues over time.
Unfortunately, this can happen inside of the walls in your home without you ever seeing any evidence of mold. Florida’s hot, humid makes this state an ideal place to call home. However, it also makes it an excellent breeding environment for several types of mold, some of which is extremely toxic and can pose a threat to your health and well-being. And when you add the rain factor to the equation, you have a paradise for mold to live and thrive in.
So the question that often arises is “Do you need a professional mold inspection?” The short answer is “Not necessarily.” Many homeowners are sometimes terrified about black mold infesting their homes and causing a host of health problems and significant structural damage. However, just because the mold in your home is black in color, this doesn’t mean that it’s the toxic variety of black mold that we are often warned about. In Florida, there is always going to be mold spores floating around in the air.
If you suspect you have a mold problem in your home, it’s probably a good idea to have a professional mold inspector test your indoor air quality to compare with your outdoor mold levels. Mold remediation is not usually recommended unless testing indicates that the amount of spores inside the home is significantly higher than what occurs outdoors. You should always schedule a mold inspection whenever:
- you own or rent an older property
- you’ve noticed an unusual musty odor inside your home
- you’re having constant health issues or your current health issues are worsening
- you suspect you have a mold infestation (i.e. you can see it or smell it)
- you’re allergic to mold or are immunocompromised
- your home has sustained water damage recently
